"The time when a designer name stood for image over quality is finished," says Gabrielle Fontappie, Desmo’s chief executive officer. Yet, Desmo has had the good fortune of both. The company’s handcrafted, classic leather designs that stand the test of time, have made the Desmo name itself synonomous with high fashion couture. "When you have a high-end, classic product that doesn’t change every three months, you know it will be one of the last to die.” Fontappie and his father, Mario, who founded the firm in 1975, have been espousing that specific philosophy for 17 years. Not ones to pounce on the latest trendy colors, prints or treatments simply for the sake of making fashion news, the firm focuses on their customers’ interests in innovative yet classic designs. Desmo’s products are in high demand in Europe as well as the Far East and North and Central America. Still, the Fontappie’s like to maintain close, personal contact with their customers and boutiques. “We want to stay in touch with style expectations by promoting constant communication to all those interested and involved in Desmo,” says Fontappie. “We believe excellence is achieved by paying rigorous attention to detail.”
